Pachelbel’s Musical Delights

Pachelbel was a major composer in his day, exerting a profound influence on Bach and many of his contemporaries. Today, however, he is a victim of his own success: his famous Canon (and Gigue) overshadows everything else he wrote. Tesserae will rectify this tragic situation by performing works from his Musicalische Ergötzung (Musical Delights), a set of trios, here performed with two violins, cello, keyboard, and lute. Pachelbel’s partitas of dance tunes and arias are written for scordatura or ‘mis-tuned’ violins, indicating a different string tuning for each of the pieces. Five violins will be used in making this program possible.
